Spring 2009 McLeansboro Flea Market
May 3, 2009
A lot of effort, planning, and hard work goes into making the semi-annual McLeansboro Flea Market a success each time out, and it takes good cooperation from everyone too. But this spring there was one person who didn’t want to cooperate, and that person was Mother Nature herself. After raining off and on (mostly on) for the good part of a week, the Hamilton County fairgrounds was a mite muddy this time out, leading to fewer vendor and crowd turnout than usual.
Saturday and Sunday it didn’t rain but the damage had been done. One had to be cautious and pick one’s way carefully or risk tramping in the mud. After visiting several yard sales Saturday morning, I ventured out to the fairgrounds and did find a few bargains including a Mother’s Day present for my mom. I spoke with a few vendors who were less than pleased with the weather conditions but seemed to be making more sales than they had expected.
Congratulations to the Hamilton County Bottle Club on making the best of a bad situation. I saw Tom Barker helping to direct traffic and I know the day was frustrating because of the mud, but he and other Bottle Club members did a terrific job given what they had to work with.
