It’s about that time, folks…time for the McLeansboro Fall Festival…time to ride a few rides, have some good food, listen to some good music…time to catch up with old friends and make some new ones.

Around 7 o’clock tonight I took a leisurely stroll around the square to see the preparations for the Fall Festival sponsored by the Kiwanis. There were several people working on getting the stands and electricity ready among other chores. It takes a tremendous amount of planning and effort by many people and organizations to bring events like this one off and I’d like to say “Thank You” to the men and women responsible for putting on such a great show. Events like this one, as well as the Hamilton County Fair, the Historical Bottle Club-sponsored Flea Markets, Dale Days put on by the Dale Ruritans, Concerts on the Square sponsored by the Beautification Task Force, and Cruise Night as well as other events are, in my humble opinion, the lifeblood of the community. I know everyone has memories of Fall Festivals  past and if you’d like to share something, please leave a comment if you’d like.

When I was a kid the Fall Festival  was always a good time to find out if a particular girl liked you. Of course you were usually too shy to ask her yourself so you sent over your best friend to find out. Then if the girl did like you you’d spend the rest of the Fall Festival riding rides with her and trying to win her that great big teddy bear. I wonder how many people in their twenties and thirties and beyond still have a teddy bear or some other carnival prize they won at a Fall Festival long ago?
